liner notes

Dirty Old Town is probably the most requested song by Europeans at our shows, and Henry's fiddle captures the desolate mood of Ewan MacColl's classic. This song is generally known through a cover done by The Pogues, but it has been in Pub song lists since its debut in the 1950s. Click Here to Buy the CD Online

Dirty Old Town

I found my love by a gaswork croft,
Dreamed a dream by the old canal.
Kissed my girl by the factory wall,
Dirty old town, dirty old town.

The moon is shifting behind a cloud,
Cats are crawling all along the beat.
Spring's a girl in the streets at night,
Dirty old town, dirty old town.

Heard a siren from the docks,
Saw a train set the night on fire.
Smelled the spring on the smoky wind,
Dirty old town, dirty old town.

I'm going to make a good sharp axe,
Shining steel tempered in a fire.
We'll chop you down like an old dead tree,
Dirty old town, dirty old town.
