liner notes

Fathers and sons are the subject of this contemporary song that celebrates the geography of the Galway region.   Brendan brought the song, and with it a whole new side of Irish music.  We open it up for a fast and fun ride down a country lane -- Galway or Irish Row.

The Saw Doctors are certainly one of our favorite Irish bands, and we heard them in concert in Boulder, Colorado doing this song, which member Leo Moran wrote. Their pace "live" was quite a bit faster than the song is on their CD (Sun Street), and we liked it enough to include it on the CD. Buy this CD Now

As we began recording the tune, we saw some possibilities to do something really different, and that is how it turned out.

We not only added the bass and drums, but had Ernie Martinez--the bass player on most of the CD--sit in on Brian's Fender--sort of a spur of the moment thing. The song has two Fender leads and two acoustic rhythm guitars, as well as Henry on fiddle.

We hope you have even half as much fun listening to this song as we did recording it!

Galway and Mayo

Hardly anyone had the tele' -
It was a different kind of world
Heaven was a game of football
Before I ever kissed the girls;
We used to go out driving ,
We'd travel near and far
Nearly every Sunday in me
Father's old Ford car.

He'd be pointing out the landmarks
E verywhere we'd go
Through the twisting, turning, winding roads
of Galway and Mayo.

With Me mother in the front seat
Children in the back
We'd be imagining indians in the fields
Waiting to attack;
And we'd be asking, "Are we nearly there?,"
Wearing clothes that came
In a parcel from America,
The two of us the same.

He'd be pointing out the landmarks
E verywhere we'd go
Through the twisting, turning, winding roads
of Galway and Mayo

There's a stillness in the summer air
Sheepdog lying in the sun;
Three young girls with butterfly nets
Break into a run.

Now the time flies by like always
I've got my own boy now
Like cowboys in the old K-30,
We'd go and drive around.
The land was let go lately,
but I take him out that way;
I show him where we cut the turf
And where we saved the hay.

I'll be pointing out the landmarks
E verywhere we go;
Through the twisting, turning, winding roads
of Galway and Mayo.
